Learning Media Assessment for Students with Visual Impairments

Learning media assessment is an objective process of systematically selecting learning and literacy media for students with visual impairments. This assessment process guides the educational team in making deliberate and informed decisions on the total range of instructional media needed to facilitate learning for students with visual impairments.
Learning media assessment encompasses general learning media and literacy media. General learning media include both instructional materials (such as pictures, rulers, worksheets) and instructional methods (such as demonstrations, modeling, prompting). Literacy media include the range of tools and technology for reading and writing in print and Braille.

The Director identifies, reviews and analyzes state and federal legislation, judicial decisions, administrative/executive decisions, rules, regulations, and standards affecting education and provides monthly reports to superintendents, MCIU Board of Directors, and to members of the Montgomery County School Directors Legislative Committee (MCSDLC). The Division also sponsors workshops and presentations. The division maintains a web page containing legislative contact information as well as pertinent legislative information.
Life Skills Support

This program is designed for disabled students, 5–21 years of age, whose primary identified need is to develop skills for independent living. Children in the Life Skills Program generally demonstrate moderate cognitive disabilities and require concrete and functional instruction. The Life Skills Support Program seeks to fully develop each student’s potential by recognizing their individuality and providing an educational program that challenges students to become life long learners. The collaborative effort of families, schools, and the community help foster the personal development of each student so they may become independent members of the school and community. Instruction emphasizes skills that will allow the student to enjoy a greater degree of participation in an enjoyable life-style. Emphasis is placed on functional academics, daily living, self-care, life skills, communication, self-advocacy skills, and vocational training.
Maximum Class Size: 12-15 (Based on PA Chapter 14 Regulations and Standards)

LifeSkills Support Itinerant Teacher

This itinerant teacher offers direct services to district staff and students in district schools kindergarten through 12th grade. Services may include any of the following:
- Staff development for special education, general education teachers, paraeducators, bus drivers/aides, and other building staff
- Consultation to first year Life Skills Support teachers
- Ongoing visits to district Life Skills Support classrooms to strengthen and expand strategies promoting student progress
- Consultation for teachers instructing Life Skills students in the typical classroom
- Student observations
- IEP writing
- Progress monitoring development and consultation
- Curriculum based assessments
- Classroom Management Strategies
- Reading, writing, mathematics instruction and consultation
- Development of communication skills, social skills, and daily living skills

Lightspeed Systems, Inc. Total Traffic Control (TTC) Service

MCIU has partnered with Lightspeed Systems to get consortium pricing on the Total Traffic Control product. It is a software product that contains full network security, anti-virus solutions, content filter, spam filter, desktop management, computer inventory (hardware/software), portable media control, packet shaping, and email archive solution. The product aggregates many functions as wells as cost reduction and better product interdependencies.
The cost for this service is annual and based on the number of computers. A server is required and size is based on the number of computers and functions running. MCIU provides end-to-end managed services for Total Traffic Control.
