2019 Challenge Description

Challenge Rubric

what is the event?

The K’nex Design Challenge is an event for students in grades 4-5 where they build a project out of K’Nex pieces. Students work in teams of 4 to design and build their project. The top team from the MCIU Regional Event will be eligible to compete at the state competition. Students will be judged on the following criteria using this rubric:

  • Creativity
  • Teamwork
  • Challenge Success
  • Design
  • Presentation
  • Budget (Parts Cost List)

who is the event for?

For the first year, the event will be open to 4th and 5th grade students from Montgomery County schools. We anticipate growing the event for more grade levels in future years.

when is the regional event? 

Tuesday, April 2 at the Montgomery County Intermediate Unit from 10am – 2pm.

when is the state event? 

The winner of the regional event will advance to the state event. The state event is scheduled for for May 17, 2019 at Harrisburg University.

Is there a cost for the event? 

Yes. The cost for each team is $65. This fee includes an 863 piece K’nex Kit to get each team started and lunch for students and teachers.
